The Punanga Nui Markets are held every Saturday from 7am - 12pm in Avarua. We recommend heading there early for first choice of fresh fruit, veggies and fish, plus island food, coffee, pastries and smoothies to enjoy while you shop.

Getting around

Rarotonga is very easy to get around by rental car, scooter, or bicycle. All motor vehicles, including scooters and motorbikes, are limited to 30kmph in the Avarua township, Muri Beach, and all school zones. 50kmph is the maximum speed limit around villages and the rest of the island.

You have to be at least 16 years or older and hold a current and valid driver’s license in order to drive in the Cook Islands. A Cook Islands license is required to ride motorcycles or scooters and can be obtained for $20 at the police station.

If you prefer public transportation, the bus system here is convenient and low-cost. The "Island Bus" runs both clockwise and anti-clockwise. Buses will stop anywhere along the main road. All you have to do is smile and wave them down.
